Cutting edge projects focusing on the mechanisms of autoimmune disease/inflammation. These projects include novel pathways that regulate macrophages, and T cells, macrophage biology linked to autoimmune disease, determining the unique and shared role of the principle macrophage developmental molecules in immune mediated inflammation, and the power of the programmed death pathway in regulating tissue injury. Furthermore, studies focus on renal regeneration mediated by resident cells and macrophages. Unique transgenic strains and knockout mice with reporter genes have been constructed on lupus susceptible strains for these projects. These projects dissect the basic mechanisms of autoimmune disease (kidney, skin, heart) and have human translational components.

Experience:
Immunology, and/or Molecular biology and Cell Biology
Knowledge of histopathology desirable
Mouse systems
Computer literacy is necessary

Desired:
Responsible, hard-working individual who is able to multi-task and to work independently

Fully Funded 3 year PhD in Denmark

The University of Aarhus and Department of Nephrology, Aarhus University Hospital Skejby, Denmark is offering a fully financed 3-year PhD programme as part of "mobility-programme" - the intention being to attract PhD students from other parts of the world.

The programme would appeal to someone with a research interest and possibly at little bit of research background who may be interested in going to Denmark to study the role of endocytic membrane receptors in kidney proximal tubule.

The focus of the PhD will be the role of the megalin/cubilin receptor complex in the development and progression of acute and chronic kidney disease. Receptor knock out models have been established and will be used in combination with models of chronic kidney disease to explore the role of megalin and cubilin in the metabolic and signalling changes that has been reported to occur in kidney diseases. Both animal models and receptor expression systems in cell culture to further explore the molecular mechanism regulating receptor function and dysfunction will be used.

Information about the programme is available at https://www.health.au.dk/medias/media11051.pdf

The relevant part of the programme (GP1) is theme T1 "Receptor mediated endocytosis and proteinuria: Renal proximal tubule membrane receptors in kidney disease".

Professor Erik Christensen is the responsible researcher.

Further information is available by contacting Professor Henrik Birn, Staff Specialist, who is also involved in the programme.

Nephrology Clinical Research Fellowship

The Alberta Kidney Disease Network (AKDN) and the University of Alberta are accepting applications for
a Fellowship in Chronic Kidney Disease Clinical Research, to be based in Edmonton, Alberta. The AKDN is
a collaborative network of Nephrology researchers located in the cities of Edmonton and Calgary in
Alberta, Canada. AKDN trainees and junior faculty have recently published papers as first authors in a
variety of major journals including JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, the American Journal of
Medicine, JASN, cJASN, Kidney International, and the American Journal of Kidney Disease (see
www.akdn.info for more information).

This two to four year Fellowship will train emerging leaders in clinical kidney disease research. Areas of
specific focus will include one or more of Clinical Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Clinical Trials,
Meta-analysis and Health Economics. Although preference will be given to those who hold advanced
(Masters level or higher) training in research methodology, qualified candidates may also choose to
pursue a first or additional graduate degree under the supervision of an AKDN faculty member.

We offer outstanding research mentorship, a wide variety of research projects, a collegial and
supportive working environment, and substantial (>80%) protected time for research. Fellows will be
free of clinical duties and on-call responsibilities except for six mandatory weeks of clinical service per
annum, which they will fulfill as junior attending physicians. Salary will be C$100,000 per annum plus
benefits (C$1 = US$1), and Fellows who hold external salary awards from outside agencies may be
eligible for an additional salary supplement. The AKDN will also consider partially funding the cost of
tuition for Fellows seeking to pursue a graduate degree during their Fellowship.

Edmonton is a vibrant metropolitan area of approximately 1M inhabitants, with excellent quality of life,
a low cost of living, and ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Financial assistance with relocation
may be available for certain candidates.

Successful candidates will be fluent in English, have completed clinical training in Nephrology, and be
eligible for licensure as an internal medicine specialist in the province of Alberta (minimum of 4 years of
residency training following medical school). Outstanding and qualified applicants are encouraged to
apply, regardless of their current country of residence.

The starting date for Fellowships is flexible. Applications will be reviewed quarterly and the application
process is competitive. Interested individuals should contact:

Bernd Tersteegen Award 2010

Dr. Bernd Tersteegen, the founder of the Verband Deutsche Nierenzentren (DN) e.V., was dedicated to the improvement of outpatient treatment modalities in end-stage renal disease. Specifically he focused on further technical development of hemodialysis. The Bernd Tersteegen award was established following the death of Dr. Tersteegen in 1995. The prize is awarded internationally both for basic and particularly for clinical research related to chronic renal insufficiency and to advances in treatment of end-stage renal disease.

The annual award of 8000 Euro is usually given to a single applicant but may be shared under certain circumstances. Applicants should be physicians, researchers, or engineers who are involved in research in the area of renal failure and renal replacement therapy. Only research papers that have been published in 2009 or 2010 or have not yet been published are suitable for submission. Papers should be written in German or English. Review articles, dissertations, university habilitation works and manuscripts already entered in other competitions may not be submitted.

Groups of authors, who submit a work, must agree to the designation of a single speaker for the group. The written consent of all co-authors of a paper to the designation of the speaker must accompany the application. An abbreviated curriculum vitae and a list of publications to date should also be submitted.

Five copies of the work must be submitted by July 15, 2010 to the following address or by email info@dnev.de

Verband Deutsche Nierenzentren (DN) e.V.
Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Werner Kleophas, FASN, President
Immermannstraße 65 A
40210 Düsseldorf, Germany

The members of the prize committee are chosen by the executive board of the DN. The president of the DN serves as chairman of the committee.

In the case in which no work is found suitable for the award, the prize money is carried over to the following year. An appeal is not allowed.

The award will be conferred at the Annual Meeting of the Association of German Nephrology Centers of the DN on November 13, 2010 in Mannheim, Germany. The presence of the award winner at the award ceremony is required. The award winner will be informed in due time.
